The four commonly referenced types of AI technology are based on capability and functionality. Here’s a clear breakdown:
- Reactive Machines
- The most basic form of AI.
- No memory, cannot learn from past experiences.
- Respond only to current inputs.
- Example: IBM’s Deep Blue chess computer.
- Limited Memory
- Most AI systems today fall into this category.
- Can use past data for a short time to make decisions.
- Example: Self-driving cars, chatbots (like me), recommendation systems.
- Theory of Mind (Future / Experimental)
- AI that understands emotions, beliefs, intentions, and can socially interact.
- Still in research; not yet achieved.
- Self-Aware AI (Hypothetical)
- AI that has consciousness, self-awareness, and independent thoughts.
- Does not exist yet.
