The best way to travel around Morocco depends on your itinerary, but most visitors find that combining trains, buses, and taxis works best.
- Trains are the most comfortable and efficient way to travel between major cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes, Fez, and Tangier. They are generally punctual, affordable, and offer first- and second-class seating. High-speed rail connects Tangier with Kenitra, Rabat, and Casablanca, making travel in the north especially convenient.
- Long-distance buses are the best option for destinations not served by rail, including Chefchaouen, Essaouira, Agadir, and much of the south. Major bus companies are reliable, comfortable, and often have air conditioning.
- Shared taxis (grand taxis) are a common way to travel between nearby towns. They leave once full, making them economical, though less comfortable than trains or buses. You can also pay for extra seats if you prefer more space.
- Local taxis (petit taxis) are ideal for getting around within cities. They are inexpensive, but it’s a good idea to confirm that the meter is used or agree on a fare before starting the journey.
- Rental cars are an excellent choice if you want to explore rural areas, the Atlas Mountains, or the Sahara at your own pace. Roads between major destinations are generally in good condition, though driving in busy city centers can be hectic.
- Domestic flights are available between some cities, but they’re usually only worthwhile for long distances, such as between Tangier and the far south.
Suggested transport by itinerary
- Imperial cities (Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Meknes, Tangier): Primarily by train.
- Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir): Bus or rental car.
- Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert: Rental car or an organized tour, as public transport is limited.
For most first-time visitors, the easiest combination is:
- Trains between the major cities.
- Buses for destinations beyond the rail network.
- Local taxis for getting around each city.
- An organized tour or rental car for desert and mountain excursions.
This approach balances cost, convenience, and flexibility while covering nearly all of Morocco’s most popular destinations.
