Asita warns tourists of fraud in Labuan Bajo’s peak travel season

Kupang, NTT (ANTARA) – The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) chapter of the Indonesian Association of Travel Companies (Asita) has warned foreign tourists to avoid illegal tour agents during the summer holiday peak in August 2025, particularly in Labuan Bajo.

NTT Asita Chairman Oyan Kristian, speaking in Kupang on Sunday, said that August typically sees a surge in tourist arrivals, especially from Europe to Labuan Bajo.

The warning was issued in light of the high volume of tourists visiting during the July–September summer holiday period, with August as the peak.

“Tourists who arrive without prior bookings often struggle to find available boats for trips to Komodo National Park due to high demand. This situation can lead them to book with illegal tour operators without properly checking their credentials,” he explained.

Kristian noted that in rushed or stressful situations, tourists often make poor decisions and end up dealing with unauthorized agents.

He cited cases where boats or pinisi ships shown in promotional photos differed from what was actually provided — and some agents even disappeared after receiving payment.

Previously, a driver in Labuan Bajo defrauded a group of British tourists on Sunday, August 2.

Kristian advised tourists to be cautious of cheap package offers from agents whose business legality is uncertain.

He urged travelers to “check the legality first” before making any purchases. “Sometimes they buy a package and only later realize it’s not what was advertised,” he said.

He recommended booking through official travel agencies that are registered with Asita, as membership signifies that an agent has undergone proper verification.

“If a problem arises, it is easier for us to investigate and help,” he added.

Kristian also urged travel operators to manage the tourist rush responsibly, avoiding overbooking and ensuring all safety checks — including ship engine inspections — are completed fully and properly.

“Maintain the quality of our services — it must not decline. We must remain consistent with what we’ve been doing so far to ensure that guests feel comfortable traveling here,” he advised.
